Borderline Adventure: Between Portugal and Spain

You will walk along the picturesque river path of the Sever, which used to serve as the natural boundary between Spain and Portugal, until you reach Portage. The town's name comes from its historical role as a toll point during medieval times when it marked the border between the two countries. Every person from Castile had to pay a toll to cross the bridge into Portugal. This significance increased when the Catholic Monarchs expelled the Jewish population from Spain. Following their path, you will cross a Renaissance bridge built with Roman stones from the nearby ancient city of Ammaia and traverse a medieval stone path connecting Portalegre and Marvão.

At the hilltop, you will enjoy a panoramic view before taking a forest trail frequented by hunters on your way back. A picnic awaits in a charming spot.

Upon returning, you will explore Castelo de Vide, known for its Jewish quarter and medieval castle, before dining at a local restaurant.

Riding: 2 - 3 hours.

You will travel along the medieval road towards the summit, passing through Marvão, an ancient Moorish city nicknamed the "eagles' nest", before continuing on to Castelo de Vide through a forest of black oaks. 

Enjoy a picnic along the way and return to your accommodations through the picturesque Alentejan countryside. Later, explore the surroundings of Marvão and witness a stunning sunset. Conclude the day with dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Riding: 6 - 7 hours.

The "ancient mountain" is a location that houses a sixth-century village along with a large necropolis. Situated far from any main roads, you will journey through a serene and picturesque landscape. This area is part of the only International Natural Park in Europe, the Taejo. Crossing the Sever River, which acts as a natural boundary between two countries, will lead you into Spain. Along the way, you will pass by an ancient Roman aqueduct and historic dolmens.

A picnic will be enjoyed by the riverbank at the border, followed by a visit to Valencia de Alcântara in the afternoon, where you can explore its synagogue and medieval district filled with grand old homes. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant. If the group consists of ten individuals, there is an opportunity to spend two nights in a medieval palace.

Riding: 6 - 7 hours.

You will find yourself in the European area with the most Neolithic burials, which are remarkably well-preserved. As you ride through rugged canyons, vultures will soar above you. 

The scenery will transition to lush greenery as you near the Alpotrel reservoir, a perfect spot for a picnic. In the afternoon, riders can choose between relaxing with massages or exploring the surroundings. Dinner will be served at a nearby restaurant.

You will stroll along nature trails and then make your way to the medieval town of San Pedro de Los Majarretes. Here, you can view a 19th-century stone monument and the monastery where a famous saint resided. After that, you will return to the border (which is merely a political concept in this area) before heading back home. 

Along the way, you will encounter waterfalls, impressive dolmens, and cross a couple of streams. Enjoy a picnic during the journey and have dinner at a local restaurant. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Cork Museum, as this region is home to the largest number of cork oaks in the Iberian Peninsula.

Riding: 6 - 7 hours.

You will start your journey from the facilities and hike up a trail used by hunters, passing through chestnut and oak trees, which are part of the typical Atlantic vegetation. Once you reach the top, you will have a panoramic view of the border countryside. 

On your way back down, you will follow some old roads before walking through the traditional Alentejo "montados," a semi-natural landscape designed for free-range cattle breeding. 

In the afternoon, you will be transferred to the airport.
