Exploring Georgia's forgotten trails, we follow ancient shepherd paths guided by a Tbilisi equestrian expert. Starting from Kakheti, horses await after a 60 km journey. Ascending 1300 meters, we conquer thorny thickets and reach an old shepherd's stop. Day three's fog gives way to stunning vistas atop Samtsorno Pass. Treacherous rocks challenge skilled horsemanship as shepherds offer insight. Rainy skies on day four havetened our passage to Kekhi Pass. Waterproofed, we journey to Omalo, embracing Shenako's warmth. Our odyssey ends, imprinted with Georgia's rugged allure.

Route details

Day 1
Tbilisi to Lechuri, Kakheti

The purpose of our arrival in Georgia is to take a route that was used by shepherds 50 years ago and today trails have disappeared in some places.
The first day's path goes up on a ridge that is covered by forest and the night we will stay in the second.
We will meet an equestrian guide in Tbilisi, who is the only one who has passed this road and is well acquainted with the trails. Our guide will prepare you for all the upcoming adventures, great beauty awaits you ahead.

The next day, we will leave for Kakheti, and in 2 hours, we will reach the beginning of the trail, where horses will be waiting for us. They will have traveled 60 kilometers the day before to meet us. Building on our experience with horseback riding and tours, our guide will select the right horses for us. We will soon pack up, load one horse with bags and food, and start our journey.

The trail will follow a forested ridge and will rise 1300 meters above the starting point. Some sections of the trail will be covered with thornbushes, making it difficult for horses to cross, so we will have to clean them by hand. We will be informed that we will not have enough drinking water before the camp, so we will book in advance. Fortunately, if the weather is cloudy, we will have enough water before the camp.

It will take us 4 hours before we climb the main ridge. The last section will be so steep that we will get off the horses and walk. Half an hour later, we will arrive at the old shepherds' stable, where we will water the horses and continue on our way.

Another hour, and we will climb up the forest massif. Soon, we will reach the campsite, from where there will be a beautiful view of the Alazani Valley.

Our guide will bring drinking water. We will make soup suitable for the field conditions, and we will also have khachapuri brought from Tbilisi. We will talk a bit after dinner, and then we will go to the tents to sleep.

It was awesome, I hadn't been on a horse in ages. The scenery was stunning with those mountains and forests, and Tango, the horse, was super friendly too. Such a great trip!
